A bright PriSecco made from apple and pear – herbal and spicy, with a note of elderflower, best served over ice.

Jörg Geiger PriSecco Weißduftig non-alcoholic is the white PriSecco from the manufactory in Schlat at the foot of the Swabian Alb: apple and pear juice from Swabian meadow orchard fruit with grape, rhubarb, peach, and ginger juice, herbs, and lemon verbena, 0.0% vol, 750 ml. Not a Prosecco, not a sparkling wine, not a juice spritzer substitute – a bold aperitif made from juice, herbs, and carbonation.

PriSecco Weißduftig by Jörg Geiger is one of the four classics of the PriSecco brand. PriSecco is a registered trademark of the manufactory and stands for non-alcoholic, sparkling compositions based on fruit juices from Swabian meadow orchard fruit, refined with herbs, blossoms, and spices, and with added carbonation. It only shares its sound with Prosecco: PriSecco is made from juice and, according to the manufacturer, has 0.0% alcohol. The Weißduftig was created in 2005, two years after the first red PriSecco, at the request of the catering industry, which was looking for a light aperitif for its guests. Imagine the moment when everyone at the table receives a glass and no one has to be asked about alcohol: this is exactly the gap that the bottle still fills today, and it is one of the top sellers in our range.

Taste

Weißduftig lives up to its name. As soon as you pour it, an intense nose of spicy herbs and elderflower rises up. Beneath this, ripe fruit notes of apple and pear appear, accompanied by a peppery spice that gives the scent more edge than you would expect from a light aperitif.

On the palate, it begins softly. The sweetness of the meadow orchard fruit carries it, while grape and peach round it off. This is followed by a herb-forward middle section – here the herbs and lemon verbena, which Jörg Geiger uses in small quantities, work together with a dash of ginger juice. The finish is spicy and brings the elderflower note back again. It is precisely this transition from soft fruit to spicy herbs that makes Weißduftig an aperitif that remains exciting even after the second glass.

For some time now, Jörg Geiger has been supplementing his recipes with a portion of selected vegetable juices. In the case of Weißduftig, this is rhubarb juice, which is why it is officially called a “non-alcoholic beverage with fruit and vegetable juice.” Rhubarb provides acidity and freshness while remaining in the background. The foundation remains the juice from apples and pears from the orchard meadows – together, this makes up about two-thirds of the bottle.

Usage

The manufactory describes the Weißduftig as a bold, fragrant aperitif that is best served over ice. If served pure, the drinking temperature is 8 to 10 °C, ideally in a champagne flute. When serving over ice, use a larger wine glass, add two or three ice cubes, and pour slowly so that the carbonation stays in the glass. The ice cools it down, dilutes the sweetness slightly, and brings the herbs to the fore.

For food pairings, Jörg Geiger recommends desserts with elderflower or exotic fruits – for example, elderflower jelly with mango or panna cotta with passion fruit. For something heartier, try goat cream cheese and rosemary: a piece of cream cheese on toasted bread, a sprig of rosemary on top, and a glass of Weißduftig on the side. The herbs in the glass and the rosemary on the plate interlock, while the acidity of the rhubarb keeps the cheese fresh.

Because it is both light and bold, the Weißduftig is also suitable for receptions at family celebrations, Sunday brunch, or as a glass for a toast at a housewarming party. It stands where a dry sparkling wine would normally be, allowing everyone to participate, including those who are driving or drinking non-alcoholic for other reasons.

Our tip: Add a sprig of fresh rosemary and a thin slice of ginger to the glass with ice before pouring in the Weißduftig. Both pick up on the spice of the composition and turn the aperitif into a drink perfect for warm evenings.

Origin

The Jörg Geiger manufactory is based in Schlat at the foot of the Swabian Alb. Jörg Geiger is a trained chef and took over his parents' inn, the Lamm, in 1997 at the age of 22. He began working with the "Champagner Bratbirne" (pear variety) in 1998, and in 2003 he bottled the first PriSecco – the Rotfruchtig. At the request of the catering industry, a light PriSecco was added in 2005 with the Weißduftig. It is the second PriSecco from the manufactory and is now one of the brand's four classics, alongside Rotfruchtig, Rosenzauber, and Apfelsinfonie.

The raw material is Swabian meadow orchard fruit: old, often tart apple and pear varieties from local orchards, supplied by local farmers. The Swabians call such fruit "räs": tart and rich in tannins, and that is exactly what gives a juice its structure. In the Weißduftig, the apple and pear juice come from these meadows, supplemented by juices from grapes, rhubarb, peach, and ginger.

All steps, from the delivery of the fruit to the maturation, processing, composition, and bottling, take place in the manufactory. Only when the fruit, herbs, and lemon verbena harmonize is the carbonation added. According to the manufacturer, all products are guaranteed to be made without chemical additives such as colorings, flavor enhancers, or stabilizers.

For whom

Weißduftig is the bottle for people who are looking for spice rather than lemonade sweetness in a non-alcoholic aperitif. It is perfect for hosts who need a bottle for a reception that everyone will like, and for anyone who enjoys herbs and elderflower. As a gift, it works just as well for people who are currently taking a break from alcohol as it does for friends who don't drink much anyway.

If you prefer fruity and red, reach for the PriSecco Rotfruchtig, the first PriSecco from 2003.
