A warm cuvée of dealcoholized Merlot and perry pear – dark fruit, finely spiced, with noticeable tannins.

Jörg Geiger non-alcoholic winter cuvée is a warm winter drink from Schlat in the Swabian Alb: dealcoholized red wine made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, dealcoholized perry, pear, cherry, and blueberry juice, honey, herbs, and spices, under 0.5% vol, 750 ml. Not a children's punch, not a ready-made mulled wine – a cuvée for 55 to 60 °C.

Jörg Geiger's non-alcoholic winter cuvée is called "Cuvée d'Hiver" by the producer and is intended to be enjoyed warm. The base consists of 72% dealcoholized red wine, 80% of which is Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is blended with 12% dealcoholized perry and 6% pear juice, as well as sour cherry, sweet cherry, and blueberry juice, honey, herbs, and spices. Dealcoholized means that the alcohol is removed from a fully fermented wine, while the fruit and tannins remain. According to the manufacturer, the current bottling has been further refined, with more wine character and a finer spice structure. An evening in December, mist hanging over the Alb outside, and something steaming in the mug that smells of red wine and pear.

Taste

The nose features dark fruit: black cherry, elderberry, and ripe plum. Added to this are dried herbs, star anise, cinnamon, and a hint of violet. On the palate, the cuvée is soft but with a noticeable structure – velvety and finely spiced, supported by a harmonious acidity and mineral depth.

The tannins from the Bordeaux varieties remain perceptible, even though the alcohol content is below 0.5% vol. With 5.4 g of sugar per 100 ml, it remains tart and fruity rather than sweet; the sweetness comes from the juices and honey. If you are expecting a sweet punch with strong cinnamon, you will find red wine character with tannin here instead.

Usage

<!--nl--otic warm, do not boil: The manufacturer's recommendation is 55 to 60 °C, as boiling distorts the delicate aromas. Heat the cuvée slowly in a pot, stir briefly or swirl gently before serving, and pour into heat-resistant glasses or mugs. One bottle is enough for about five 150 ml cups.

The manufacturer does not provide a specific food pairing recommendation here. We like to serve the cuvée with things that also go well with red wine: a piece of spicy mountain cheese, walnuts, roasted chestnuts, or a plate of gingerbread. For a home Christmas market, a pot on the stove and a pitcher on the table are all you need.

Our tip: Place a thin slice of orange or a cinnamon stick in the mug. The spices are already in the cuvée; a fresh accent on top is sufficient.

Origin

Red wine and pear come together here; in the subtitle, the manufacturer calls it "with Merlot & perry pear." The Jörg Geiger manufactory is located in Schlat on the Albtrauf of the Swabian Alb. Jörg Geiger, a trained chef, took over his parents' inn, the Lamm, in 1997 at the age of 22 and began working with the "Champagner Bratbirne" (pear variety) a year later. Old pear varieties have been a staple of the assortment ever since, from sparkling wine to the non-alcoholic PriSecco. From delivery to bottling, all work steps remain within the manufactory.

Since 2023, the manufactory has been dealcoholizing wines in its own facility for the GRAD°WANDERUNG line and refining them with juices, herbs, and spices. The winter cuvée follows the same principle, intended for the cold season and for the mug rather than the wine glass.

For whom

The cuvée is for anyone who wants to drink something warm with wine character in winter. It is suitable for driving guests, an Advent evening during the week, or at the fire pit in the garden. For a still version to serve with food, there is the Edition Lamothe, a still red wine made from dealcoholized Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
