Nutsler: Nut schnapps from the Black Forest
Distilling fruit, berries, and nuts is an old German craft – and Nutsler has dedicated itself entirely to the nut. Since 2019, Nutsler Spirituosen GmbH has been bringing its nut spirits to market, and is now based in Schutterwald in the Ortenau region. They are distilled in a small-batch distillery in the Black Forest: master distiller Bernd Schrempp built the copper still himself during his classical apprenticeship. The recipes were fine-tuned in Berlin with bartenders and restaurateurs through numerous tastings – hence the motto on every label: “Heartcrafted in the Black Forest. Tasted in Berlin.”
Hazelnut, pistachio, cashew, coconut: four nuts, four characters
All varieties are spirits with 35% ABV in 500 ml bottles, each with a handwritten bottle number. Nutsler Hazelnut is the distillery’s classic: the nuts are gently roasted before distillation, resulting in full-bodied nut-nougat aromas in the glass that are not too sweet. Nutsler Pistachio, referred to by Nutsler as “the princess,” features roasted pistachio with light almond and marzipan notes; it is mild and slightly sweet. Nutsler Cashew is the most distinctive variety, robust and closer to a classic brandy than a dessert liqueur. Nutsler Coconut – labeled as “Coconut Water” – is made from coconut meat and tastes slightly sweet and tropical.
As a shot, with beer, or in a cocktail
Nutsler recommends its spirits as shots, for mixing, to accompany beer, or as an after-dinner drink. Hazelnut works well in a long drink with coffee tonic, pistachio pairs perfectly with pistachio ice cream and almond cookies, and cashew is an ideal digestif after a savory meal. Enjoy Nutsler Coconut neat at room temperature or use it in place of white rum in a Piña Colada. Note for allergy sufferers: Hazelnut, pistachio, and cashew are tree nuts.
