NURI sardines: packed by hand in the tin since 1920
NURI is the brand of the Pinhais & C.ª cannery in Matosinhos, Porto's fishing port, 500 meters from the Atlantic. Founded in 1920, operating under this name since 1935, and still using the same method today: only fresh fish goes into the tin. The sardines are placed in brine, steam-cooked, and then packed individually by hand; for the spicy varieties, piri-piri, cucumber, carrot, bay leaf, and clove are added. Finally, every tin is wrapped by hand in the yellow-and-red paper, the design of which dates back to the 1930s. 37 steps per tin – that is why the fish are packed so evenly.
Sardines and mackerel: all varieties at Leni & Hans
Whole sardines are available in olive oil – our best-selling tinned fish –, in spicy and extra spicy olive oil, in tomato sauce, in spicy tomato sauce, and as a limited edition with lemon. Mackerel comes as skinless and boneless fillets, mild or spicy, and as whole small mackerel. All tins: 125 g with 90 g of fish; ingredients are fish, olive oil or tomato, salt, and, for the spicy varieties, the pickled vegetables – no added flavorings, no sugar. The 4-piece gift box brings the four classics together in one carton.
How NURI sardines taste best
On toasted bread with a little lemon, in a salad with tomatoes and red onion, or warmed over pasta with garlic and the oil from the tin. The tomato sardines go well with fried potatoes and rice, and the mackerel fillets are the variety for those who don't like bones. For every variety, you will find specific ideas from our kitchen on the product page.

In Austria, the yellow tin has been a supermarket staple for decades; in Germany, it is rarer to find. At Leni & Hans, you can get all varieties delivered to you in 1–3 days. You can find further tinned fish from Portugal and Spain in the tinned fish category.
