Worth it! Making your own guacamole
Guacamole is the perfect vegan dip — a wonderful alternative to quark and yogurt dips. You can prepare this avocado dip quickly and easily in 15 minutes. Homemade guacamole tastes more aromatic than a store-bought product and elevates snacks, vegetables, fish, and meat dishes in an instant.
Guacamole ingredients
The classic ingredients for the avocado dip: avocados, garlic, limes, tomatoes, cilantro.
The avocado
For a flavorful guacamole, avocados must be ripe. At the supermarket, you can press your thumb gently against the peel — if it gives, the fruit is ripe. If the avocados are hard, simply let them ripen for another 2–3 days at room temperature (to speed this up, place them in a paper bag with an apple).
Limes
Fresh limes add acidity and freshness — and prevent the avocado from turning brown. If necessary, lemon works too, but lime is more characteristic and fits better.
Cilantro
Fresh cilantro is a hallmark of authentic guacamole. If you don't like cilantro, you can use flat-leaf parsley instead — the flavor profile will be a little different, but still delicious.
Preparation
- Halve the avocados, remove the pit, scoop out the flesh, and place in a bowl.
- Press the garlic clove, then add lime juice, salt, and pepper.
- Mash coarsely with a fork — do not puree; slight chunks are desirable.
- Fold in the diced tomatoes (without the juice) and chopped cilantro.
- Adjust seasoning — perhaps more lime, salt, or a hint of chili.
Variations
- Classic Mexican: With chopped chili and scallions
- Mediterranean: With feta cubes and a splash of olive oil
- With pomegranate: Pomegranate seeds as a topping add freshness and crunch
- With toasted pine nuts: For extra crunch and nuttiness
Storage
It is best to consume guacamole fresh — it will discolor after a few hours. Tip to prevent browning: place the avocado pit in the bowl and cover it with plastic wrap pressed directly onto the surface.
