Kölsche Kopfnuss: the hazelnut spirit from the Cologne region

Kölsche Kopfnuss is the spirit created by David Beil from Pulheim near Cologne. It originated as an idea for the Cologne Christmas markets, was developed over several months, and has been produced in small batches with a regional distillery since 2015. The base is a distillate of roasted hazelnuts, to which caramel is added; it is aged until the aroma and taste are well-defined and the alcohol is harmoniously integrated.

Between a schnapps and a liqueur

In the glass, Kölsche Kopfnuss shows a strong, golden-yellow color, with a fine sweetness on the nose and roasted hazelnut on the palate with notes of chocolate, nougat, and caramel. At 40% ABV, it is milder and softer than a classic schnapps, but significantly less sweet than a liqueur – perfect for anyone who finds hazelnut liqueur too sweet. You can drink it neat, slightly chilled from a shot glass, or as a “Kölsche Mélange”: espresso, a splash of Kopfnuss, and milk foam.
