van Nahmen Stromberger Plum Direct Juice. Single-varietal plum direct juice from the Münsterland region – mild, fruit-sweet, and slightly spicy.

van Nahmen Stromberger Plum Direct Juice is a single-varietal plum juice made from the Stromberg plum, an old prune variety from Stromberg in the Münsterland region. It is pressed by the van Nahmen fruit press house in Hamminkeln on the Lower Rhine; 100% direct juice in a 0.75-liter bottle.

Stromberger Plum Direct Juice from van Nahmen bears the name of a village. The Stromberger plum is a prune, and it has been growing for over 200 years in Stromberg in the Münsterland. Prunes are a type of plum, usually more elongated and with firmer flesh. Single-varietal means: this bottle contains exclusively this one variety. Direct juice means: the fruits are pressed and the juice is bottled without an intermediate step using concentrate. According to the manufacturer, only fully ripe fruits are processed. A Sunday in autumn, beef roulades are simmering in the pot, and the table is missing something for those who aren't drinking wine with lunch: that is what this bottle is for.

Taste

The Stromberger Plum Direct Juice has a mild aroma, a distinct fruit sweetness, and a slightly spicy note. The acidity remains subtly in the background. The manufacturer describes the profile as having fine sweetness and subtle acidity, fruity and mild.

The slight spiciness comes from the prune itself; there is only juice in the bottle. Because only fully ripe fruits are pressed, the juice tastes round and soft. Those expecting a tart, zesty juice will find it too mild.

Usage

You can drink it pure or as a spritzer. In summer, mix it with cold sparkling water; in the cooler months, drink it pure with braised dishes. Van Nahmen also suggests serving it like a light, off-dry red wine. A serving temperature of 14 to 16 °C (57–61 °F), i.e., only slightly chilled, is suitable for this. According to the manufacturer, it goes well with saltwater fish, beef, chicken, and turkey, as well as veal.

The tasting note reads like a family cookbook: lasagna, bolognese, beef roulade, and baked Camembert, as well as salmon and sea bream. For roulade with red cabbage, the fruit sweetness complements the dark sauce. With baked Camembert, the juice takes on the role of cranberries. With oven-baked salmon, it adds a mild fruitiness to the plate.

Once opened, place the bottle in the refrigerator. According to the manufacturer, it should be finished within five days.

Our tip: For lasagna at the family table, set out a carafe with Stromberger Plum, half juice, half still water. This way, the younger ones also have a dark glass to accompany their meal.

Origin

The story of this plum begins around 1790. According to the manufacturer, Ludwig Niedieck brought the variety to Stromberg from southern France and Spain at that time. It has remained there: it is a very old, mid-to-late maturing prune variety that grows on standard trees. According to van Nahmen, it carries a protected designation of origin, and there are around 15,000 trees in the castle village of Stromberg today.

The owners of the orchards receive a fair price for their fruit through the press house's premium price project. It is pressed in Hamminkeln on the Lower Rhine, where the van Nahmen family has been processing fruit since 1917. The juice stands there in a line with other single-varietal juices, from the Red Sternrenette apple to the Morellenfeuer sour cherry. According to the manufacturer, it is vegan.

For whom

This plum juice is for everyone looking for a non-alcoholic glass with fruit and depth to accompany their meal. It suits Sunday dinner with the family, autumn cuisine, and barbecue evenings. Those who usually enjoy a light red wine will find a familiar companion here. And those with relatives in the Münsterland region will bring a piece of home to the table with this bottle. The Morellenfeuer Sour Cherry Juice is drier and more tart. The Organic Apple Juice from Orchard Meadows is light and fresh. Further single-varietal juices can be found on our page for van Nahmen. It is not suitable for those looking for a tart, dry juice like cherry juice.

An old prune variety from the Münsterland, 100% direct juice – the plum juice from Hamminkeln for roulade, lasagna, and baked Camembert.
