Windspiel Non-Alcoholic. Non-alcoholic gin alternative with juniper, clove, and citrus, 0.0% vol, vegan and sugar-free.
Windspiel Non-Alcoholic is a non-alcoholic gin alternative from the Volcanic Eifel: twelve local and exotic botanicals, macerated and distilled, with juniper berries, clove, allspice, and a citrus note, 0.0% vol, vegan, 500 ml. It is not a gin, but is used like one – with tonic, on ice, as a base for mocktails.
Windspiel Non-Alcoholic is the answer to that Tuesday evening when you want to drink a gin and tonic but have to be up early the next morning. The distillery treats the botanicals just like they do for their gin: macerated and distilled according to the master distiller's recipe. The result in the glass is not a spirit, but a spicy, non-alcoholic base with 0.0% vol. It is very popular with us because it is just as easy to use as a gin: ice in the glass, add the base, top with tonic, and you're done.
A non-alcoholic gin alternative is a distinct drink with its own recipe and is not created by diluting gin. For Windspiel, this means: clove and allspice for spice, juniper as a nod to gin, and citrus for freshness.
Clove and allspice upfront, juniper and citrus behind
The base tastes balanced and spicy: fine notes of clove and allspice, juniper berries, and a citrus note that keeps everything fresh.
Twelve botanicals, both local and exotic, carry this flavor. Windspiel calls the base a real alternative with its own personality, even for connoisseurs of the original. We would put it this way: the juniper is there, the spice is in the foreground, and it is not a gin clone. That is exactly why it works as a drink in its own right.
Anyone mixing a non-alcoholic drink with gin character for the first time should start with the classic Non-Alcoholic & Tonic. In it, you can identify the individual building blocks: clove and allspice, juniper, and the citrus note. At Windspiel, the botanicals are both macerated and distilled, and both contribute to a flavor experience that Windspiel describes as particularly aromatic.
The list of ingredients includes more than just botanicals, and we are transparent about that: the label lists water, citric acid, natural distillates, natural flavoring, and the preservative potassium sorbate. The base is sugar-free and vegan. According to the manufacturer, Windspiel Non-Alcoholic is crafted by hand in Germany.
As a Non-Alcoholic & Tonic, a Mule, or for citrus mocktails
The easiest way to drink Windspiel Non-Alcoholic is as a Non-Alcoholic & Tonic, just as you would build a Gin & Tonic.
Pour 5 cl of the base over plenty of ice in a large glass and top with 12 cl of cold tonic water. A slice of lemon and a few lightly crushed juniper berries complement the taste. For a Mule, mix 5 cl with 10 cl of ginger beer and the juice of half a lime, and garnish with a sprig of mint. Bitter lemon or an orange zest also give the drink a different direction.
For those who prefer something lighter, top 5 cl of the base with soda water and a splash of lemon juice. The result is drier and allows the spice of the clove and allspice to come through more clearly. Windspiel explicitly recommends the Non-Alcoholic as a long drink or mocktail in good company. Any tonic water you like works as a companion; the colder and the more ice, the fresher the citrus note remains.
The base pairs well with food because it is both spicy and fresh: with grilled fish, goat cheese, antipasti, and salads with citrus dressing. For larger gatherings, prepare the glasses with ice and lemon slices and add the base and tonic just before serving. If you prefer more spice, use 6 cl of base to 12 cl of tonic; if you prefer it milder, go with 4 cl.
Our tip: Squeeze the lemon zest over the glass before garnishing. The oil from the peel combines with the clove and brings the spice to the fore.
Distilled and macerated like gin
Windspiel is a distillery in Berlingen near Daun in the Volcanic Eifel, and the Non-Alcoholic is created there just like the gin.
Sandra Wimmeler and Denis Lönnendonker founded the company in 2014. It became known for gins made from potato alcohol, with potatoes grown on their own farm in the mineral-rich volcanic soil of the Eifel. The Non-Alcoholic follows the craft of gin-making: botanicals are macerated and distilled according to the master distiller's recipe in elaborate manual labor. The distillery uses solar power and distillation takes place in Germany.
Windspiel describes the production process as just as complex as for their gin, with the same standards for the ingredients. The founders placed just as much value on the quality of the non-alcoholic version as on the original. Practical for everyday life: once opened, the bottle has a shelf life of eight weeks according to the label, so plan on using the 500 ml within the next few weeks. At 5 cl per drink, the bottle is enough for ten glasses, and because it lasts for eight weeks once opened, you can spread your drinks over several evenings.
For evenings with the car, guests taking a break, and gin fans
This bottle is for everyone who loves gin and tonic and wants to forgo alcohol on certain evenings.
It is suitable for guests driving home, for after-work drinks during the week, and for groups where someone is taking a break but still wants to have a proper glass in their hand. The bottle is also a great gift idea for gin fans who are currently taking a break from alcohol. If you want to know what the original tastes like, take a look at the Premium Dry Gin with 47% vol. You can find the entire range on our Windspiel page.
The Non-Alcoholic is not suitable for those expecting a sweet lemonade – the base is spicy and balanced, with clove and allspice. And it is not made for long-term storage: after opening, it lasts for eight weeks.
