Saluti, Cheers! Finally, Negroni Week 2022 is taking place again worldwide from September 12th to September 18th. The event celebrates the classic cocktail in all its variations for a good cause. Participating bars donate a self-determined amount from every Negroni ordered to a charity project of their choice.
On the occasion of Negroni Week, our spirit manufacturers will present the best recipes for the famous cocktail over seven days. In doing so, they explain why they are Negroni fans and reveal their own personal twist.
The classic Negroni
Ingredients for one glass:
- 30 ml Gin (classic London Dry)
- 30 ml Sweet Vermouth (e.g., Carpano Antica Formula, Martini Rosso)
- 30 ml Campari
- Ice cubes
- Orange zest as garnish
Preparation: Place all ingredients into a tumbler filled with ice, stir briefly, and garnish with orange zest. Classic. Bitter. Complex.
The history of the Negroni
Legend has it that the Negroni was invented in Florence in 1919 by Count Camillo Negroni. He ordered an Americano (Sweet Vermouth + Campari + soda) at his local haunt, Caffè Casoni, and asked the bartender to replace the soda with gin—and to use a twist of orange instead of lemon. The Negroni was born.
Negroni twists and variations
Negroni Sbagliato
The "wrong" Negroni — gin is replaced by Prosecco or Champagne. Lighter, fizzier, perfect for aperitivo hour.
Boulevardier
Like a Negroni, but bourbon or rye whiskey is used instead of gin. Warmer and more complex.
Old Pal
Rye whiskey + dry vermouth + Campari — a drier version of the Boulevardier.
White Negroni
Gin + Lillet Blanc + Suze (gentian liqueur) — a light, floral-bitter variation.
Negroni with Mezcal
Mezcal instead of gin — adds a smoky note to the mix.
Negroni Spritz
Gin + sweet vermouth + Campari + soda + ice — lighter and fizzier than the classic.
Bohemian Negroni
With Becherovka (Czech herbal liqueur) instead of sweet vermouth — herbal-forward and complex.
Tips for the perfect Negroni
- Good ice — large, clear ice cubes keep the drink cold without diluting it quickly
- Fresh orange zest — rub briefly over the glass; the oil makes the difference
- Pre-chill the glass — the drink stays fresh longer
- Work with good ingredients — all three components must be of high quality
- Vary with vermouth styles — Carpano Antica Formula adds more depth, Martini Rosso is more classic
- Don't shake — a Negroni is always stirred, never shaken
Negroni Week and Charity
Negroni Week was launched in 2013 by Imbibe Magazine. Today, thousands of bars worldwide participate. Anyone who orders a Negroni at a participating bar supports charitable projects with a portion of the price. A beautiful tradition that gives a social purpose to the love of the cocktail.
