Ölmühle Solling Organic Virgin Coconut Oil 500 ml. Organic virgin coconut oil for frying and baking – mild, snow-white, and with a delicate coconut note.
Ölmühle Solling Organic Virgin Coconut Oil is a virgin cooking oil made from the dried fruit flesh of organically grown coconuts, bottled by Ölmühle Solling in Boffzen on the Weser river. The jar contains 500 ml, and the only ingredient is organic coconut oil. It is neither refined nor hydrogenated, bleached, or deodorized.
Organic Virgin Coconut Oil from Ölmühle Solling starts with copra. This is the term for the dried coconut flesh from which the oil is pressed. Virgin means that the oil remains in its natural state after pressing. It therefore does not undergo any refining that would alter its color, smell, or taste. That is why it has a delicate coconut scent. Below about 24 °C (75 °F), coconut oil is solid and snow-white; above that, it becomes clear and liquid. So, in winter, you will find a solid fat in your kitchen cupboard, and in midsummer, a liquid oil. Both are normal and say nothing about the quality. At room temperature, it can be spread like soft butter. The 500 ml jar is the handy size for those who want to introduce coconut oil into their daily kitchen routine.
Taste
According to the manufacturer, the oil tastes mild, with a fine, nutty coconut note. It is clearly present if you taste a spoonful on its own, but it recedes when used in a pan. In sweet recipes, it enhances vanilla, caramel, or banana. In savory dishes, it acts as a light, rounded undertone beneath spices such as curry, ginger, or chili.
Those looking for a completely neutral frying fat will find the coconut note too prominent. For this purpose, the mill offers the deodorized extra-mild coconut fat, which is tasteless and odorless. The virgin oil is the right choice if you want a hint of coconut flavor.
Use
The manufacturer describes the coconut oil as heat-resistant. You can use it for frying, baking, steaming, and deep-frying. In the pan, it suits wok vegetables, fried rice, or a vegetable curry with sweet potato and chickpeas. When baking, it replaces butter in recipes like banana bread, oat cookies, or a pound cake with shredded coconut. Because it is solid at room temperature, you simply melt it briefly in a pot for doughs and stir it in while lukewarm.
You can also put it on bread: the manufacturer lists it as a butter substitute and bread spread. With a little honey or jam, it becomes a quick breakfast. For granola, melt two tablespoons, mix with rolled oats, nuts, and a little sweetener, and toast everything in the oven until golden brown.
Our tip: Sauté onions, garlic, and curry paste in a tablespoon of coconut oil before adding vegetables and organic coconut milk. This way, the coconut note will run through the entire curry from start to finish.
Origin
According to the product information, the coconuts for this oil come from the Philippines; the descriptive text also mentions Sri Lanka and India. The first step takes place in the country of cultivation. The fruit flesh is freed from the brown seed coat, blanched with hot air, and dried into copra. It is then pressed purely mechanically, according to the manufacturer without the addition of heat. The organic logo bears the code DE-ÖKO-039 with the addition "non-EU agriculture." Accredited laboratories test the oil for residues.
Behind the jar is Ölmühle Solling from Boffzen in the Weser Uplands, a family business that has worked exclusively with organic raw materials since 1996. Coconut is a key focus for them. According to the mill, long-standing trade partnerships have developed from the founding family's earlier work in Southeast Asia and South America.
For whom
The organic virgin coconut oil is for you if you enjoy cooking Asian dishes, baking vegan, or want to replace butter in certain recipes. According to the manufacturer, it is vegan and lactose-free. The ingredient list mentions only organic coconut oil, meaning it contains none of the 14 major allergens. Store the jar in a cool, dark place at 10 to 20 °C (50–68 °F); the refrigerator is too cold for this. If you cook with it frequently, you might want to opt for the large one-liter jar later on. You can find more oils, nuts, and pestos on our page for Ölmühle Solling. The virgin oil is not suitable for recipes where any coconut flavor would be undesirable.
