DR. HÖHL'S Pomp Organic Aperitif Non-Alcoholic Dry comes in a 0.2-liter piccolo bottle and is a 100% alcohol-free organic aperitif (0.0%). Apple, gooseberry, cucumber, and blackcurrant juice combine with 21 botanicals and carbonation. The Höhl family from Maintal near Frankfurt bottles it in organic quality.

The dry POMP in a piccolo bottle by DR. HÖHL'S is the smaller version of a sophisticated non-alcoholic drink. A piccolo is a sparkling wine bottle containing 0.2 liters, which is about one to two glasses. Many are familiar with this format for sparkling wine at hotels or for toasts at the office. It is rarer for non-alcoholic beverages, yet it has a clear advantage: you open exactly the amount you drink, and nothing goes to waste. Inside is the same recipe as the large bottle. Cucumber juice at 6.6%, apple, gooseberry, and blackcurrant form the base. Turmeric, cardamom, coriander, ginger, bitter orange blossom, daisies, Pu-Erh tea, and cubeb pepper provide spice and tartness. No sugar is added.

Taste

Tart and complex—that is how DR. HÖHL'S describes the "Feinherb" (dry/off-dry) variety. When poured, it smells of orange blossom and fresh cucumber. The palate follows with oriental spices, a tart spiciness, and an ethereal freshness reminiscent of cardamom and coriander. Green tea notes and a hint of turmeric add depth. The finish is bittersweet and long. The carbonation keeps the drink lively and light. Anyone looking for a sweet soft drink will find it too tart.

Usage

Chill the piccolo to 8 °C; that is when it best displays its freshness. According to the manufacturer, it tastes great served neat over ice with a slice of cucumber and a sprig of rosemary. As an aperitif before dinner, it sets the mood for the palate. In cocktails, it serves as a botanical filler, adding spice to the mix.

The small bottle fits situations where a large one would be too much. A glass on the balcony after work, a picnic in the park, a toast for two, or a gift basket. It pairs well with small snacks like olives, cheese cubes, crackers with cream cheese and cucumber, or roasted chickpeas. The tart note also works well alongside a plate of sushi. For a quick drink, add ice, a splash of lime, and a basil leaf to a glass and top up with the piccolo. According to the manufacturer, the unopened bottle has a shelf life of two years.

Our tip: Place a few piccolos next to the sparkling wine bottles when expecting guests. This way, everyone gets their own small bottle and a full glass, even without alcohol.

Origin

The POMP organic 0.0 aperitifs have been available as 0.2-liter piccolos since 2021. The dry variety itself launched in 2018, one year after the fruity one. It was developed by DR. HÖHL'S, the family business run by Johanna, Johannes, and Anna from Maintal. According to them, the family has been processing apples from the orchards around Hochstadt since 1779.

On their product pages, the family summarizes their philosophy in one sentence: they want others to benefit from their existence. For POMP, this means that guests who aren't drinking alcohol also receive a special glass. All ingredients are organic from EU agriculture, inspection body DE-ÖKO-006. According to the list of ingredients, none of the 14 main allergens are included.

The piccolo is for anyone who prefers to enjoy a tart, non-alcoholic aperitif in smaller portions. It is suitable for singles, couples, and parties where every guest gets their own bottle.
