Sabine Pusch loves the vastness of the Thuringian meadow orchards. Old and new fruit tree varieties grow there across large areas. Kyffhäuserobst processes the fruit fresh from the harvest just like in grandmother’s day.
A conversation with Sabine Pusch from Kyffhäuser Obst
Ms. Pusch, how do you awaken forgotten flavors?
Alongside modern varieties, nearly forgotten fruit treasures are finding a home and a secure future with us once again. Particularly delicious examples include the Victoria plum, the Gute Luise pear, or the Gravensteiner apple. We process the fruits as single-varietal products. Our products often awaken childhood memories of long-forgotten flavors.
Why are regional foods so important?
People’s interest in conscious nutrition is growing. Regional origin and the traceability of processing steps are becoming increasingly important. For me, both are a daily motivation and driving force. We have very short transport distances here, which results in a positive carbon footprint. Furthermore, the fruit goes straight into the cooking pot while fresh. Our Kyffhäuserobst products taste particularly intense.

So you process the fruit fresh from the meadow orchard?
The name of my small manufactory speaks for itself. Kyffhäuserobst refers to my immediate surroundings. Our business idea is based on the concept of regionality. The distances from harvest to processing are simply very short and traceable. We can show you the trees here that the fruit comes from. Practically next door, we process them by hand. We market fruit spreads and other products locally in our small shop. Everything, without exception, is directly in and around Bad Frankenhausen!
I capture the character of the different fruit varieties.
How did you come up with the idea for Kyffhäuserobst?
I have been entrusted with the care and maintenance of the fruit orchard since the first trees were planted. High-quality fruit was increasingly being produced here. In 2018, I decided to make meaningful and continuous use of the fruit.

And your fruit spreads are made just like in grandmother’s day?
We pick the untreated fruit by hand. In my small Kyffhäuserobst manufactory, we sort the individual fruits and refine them into natural treats. We even apply the labels by hand. With my creations, I capture the special character of the various fruit varieties. That is why I forgo unnecessary frills and use as little sugar as possible.
What is the feedback from your customers?
Satisfied customers become repeat customers! They are convinced by the taste and quality of our products. With us, they don’t experience a generic taste, but a special variety. With Kyffhäuserobst, customers rediscover old varieties and learn to appreciate them. With us, you can taste nature in its purest form!
And how do you prefer to enjoy your jams?
Our fruit spreads have many uses. They delight us time and time again in the traditional way: on a fresh bread roll with butter at a beautifully set breakfast table!
