Conversation with Simon Maisack of Kosmaten
Simon, what are Kosmaten?
For the gin, we initially had a label with a mosaic pattern. While searching for a name, we came across the mosaicists of ancient Rome—they called themselves "Cosmati." The tradition originated in the Arab world and spread to Italy during the Middle Ages. We see ourselves as mosaicists: piece by piece, we develop our products into a total work of art.
You are aesthetes of good taste. Among all the gins out there, why did you want to create your own?
We often sat together and drank gin. We liked the taste of many of them, but we always had something to criticize regarding details like the presentation or individual flavor components. Then we read up on the world of gin and invested money in a small still. After some trial and error, we quickly had an acceptable result. We developed the final product with a distiller friend—that was a decisive leap in quality.
What sets MESANO apart from other gins?
At MESANO, we rely on Mediterranean botanicals—citrus fruits, herbs from the Mediterranean region, and a fine note of juniper. The composition is designed for elegance and drinkability, not for showy effects. The bottle design reflects our values: clean lines, calm colors, and high-quality materials.
