Rosenberg Organic Redcurrant & Blackcurrant. Organic fruit spread made from red and black currants – tart, smooth, and versatile.
Rosenberg Organic Redcurrant & Blackcurrant is an organic fruit spread made from the juice of red and black currants, sweetened with cane sugar. Rosenberg Delikatessen produces it in Leipzig; the black currants are sourced, among other places, from the Mönchpfiffel Monastery. Each jar contains 160 g.
Rosenberg's Redcurrant & Blackcurrant is a blend of two berries that complement each other perfectly. Red currants provide a bright, fresh acidity, while black currants—the cassis berries—offer a deeper, more tart, and spicy flavor. Rosenberg uses the juice of both varieties for this spread, cooking it with cane sugar and apple pectin. This results in a smooth spread free of fruit skins, a quality many appreciate in currant preserves. It is made using 67 g of fruit per 100 g. This jar has been a customer favorite for years, especially for those who enjoy a bit of acidity at breakfast.
Flavor
The manufacturer describes the currant spread as having a balanced, tart flavor. First comes the fresh acidity of the red currants, followed by the dark, slightly bitter depth of the black ones. The cane sugar rounds it out without overpowering the fruit. It features a deep ruby-red color and a smooth, spreadable consistency.
The black currant, in particular, gives the spread its character. Its aroma is bold and distinct, reminding some of forests and foliage. Blended with red currants, the flavor feels vibrant rather than heavy. You might recognize this combination from redcurrant meringue pie, where the acidity cuts through the sweetness. This spread works on the same principle, only with bread instead of meringue. Those looking for a mild, sweet spread for children will likely find this currant version too tart.
Usage
This spread is best enjoyed on breakfast toast with butter or quark to soften its acidity. It makes a fresh contrast when served on crêpes, with vanilla pudding, or alongside vanilla ice cream. It also pairs wonderfully with cheesecake or as a filling for Linzer cookies.
Rosenberg suggests another idea: the manufacturer recommends using the spread in combination with olive oil and fruity mustard to create a salad dressing. A spoonful of currant spread, a teaspoon of mustard, some vinegar, and oil, a pinch of salt—and you have a vinaigrette for lamb's lettuce or arugula with goat cheese. The currant spread also adds a lovely touch to dark sauces for game, duck, or lamb.
Once opened, the jar should be kept in the refrigerator. The manufacturer recommends consuming it within 5 to 7 days, as Rosenberg does not use any preservatives.
Our tip: Lamb's lettuce with toasted walnuts and a vinaigrette made from currant spread and fruity mustard. Serve with a piece of grilled goat cheese, and dinner is ready.
Origin
The black currants are sourced, among other places, from the Mönchpfiffel Monastery. The fruit for Rosenberg comes from small, organic-certified plantations and meadow orchards in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, and Brandenburg. The fact that the currant spread ends up in dressings is rooted in the company's founding philosophy: Matthias Rosenberg wanted to offer all ingredients for a salad dressing from a single source, which is why he also produces mustards and oils alongside his spreads. The Rosenberg mustards are crafted exclusively for the company by Georgsenf in Halle (Saale). The spreads are prepared in a kitchen at the Leipzig Kesselkollektiv. Rosenberg is organic-certified by the control body DE-ÖKO-060. According to the ingredient list, this spread contains none of the 14 major allergens.
